More efficient, powerful and cheaper - POET
Technologies (TSX-V:PTK) is developing technology
that promises to greatly disrupt the traditional
integrated silicon semiconductor.
POET, Planar Opto-Electronic Technologies, has
been in development for over 20 years.
The technology produces Gallium Arsenide
(GaAs) integrated circuits that combine the
previously thought impossible electronics and optics
into one powerful processing chip. POET, with the
recent breakthroughs in GaAs, is on track to deliver
the next generation of commercial and military grade
processors that are significantly faster and more
efficient than incumbent technology.
A major driving force behind the need for the
next wave of semiconductors is the threatening end
of Moore’s law – and POET Technologies has found
the viable solution. Moore’s Law has been dictating
the pace of technological change for 50 years,
transistors on processing chips have been doubling
progressively every 1.5 to 2 years.
With this steady increase, costs have been
rising in succession, and have shown to become
unsustainable in the near future. The impending
limitations in existing silicon chips will have rippling
effects in the technology sector, as PCs, tablets,
smart TVs and phones struggle to meet the consumer
time-to-market demands for high-tech innovation.
Major chip manufacturers such as Intel, Samsung
and Qualcomm among others, are already scrambling
to research the next alternative, and are believed
to be several years (at
minimum) behind POET.

Most recently, POET
Technologies has press-released a monumental achievement of size reduction
of its Gallium Arsenide chips to near silicon chip levels for
personal computer processing.
The potential of the GaAs chips is colossal in both
the short term and the long term. Gallium Arsenide
is proven to be up to 100x faster, up to 95% more
efficient in both power and processing ability and is
just as cheap as silicon to mass produce.
In fact, current silicon chip producing equipment
can be utilized for Gallium Arsenide chips, which
will allow POET to mass produce with existing
manufacturing flows, taking full advantage of existing
technology and economies of scale. The advantages
don’t stop there; GaAs chips that are currently used
for military and space applications absorb sunlight
more efficiently, have higher resistance to radiation
and can operate at much higher temperatures than
their silicon counterparts, reducing the form-factor
requirements of electronics by an extensive margin.
In the near term POET Technologies is aiming
to address the need in the optical and discrete
semiconductor markets, as well as sensors, actuators
and analogue IC’s, with a combined market potential
forecasted to be $136 billion by 2015. Future markets
include logic, MCU, MPU and memory valued at $293
billion to name just a few. POET Technologies looks
to be set up to have a very bright future.
