Angela D. Austman
Lawson Lundell LLP
Q: Tell us about your background and career?
A: I am based in Vancouver and practice in corporate finance and
securities as a Partner at Lawson Lundell LLP. My practice has
evolved over 13 years to include a specialization in investment
fund formation, exempt market financing and securities registrant
regulation and compliance. I also work with publicly listed issuers,
mostly in the mineral exploration industry.
I started my career at a national law firm, where I practised for 5
years. I then transitioned to, and ultimately joined the partnership
of, a Vancouver corporate finance boutique that is internationally
recognized for its expertise in private equity transactions. The
experience I gained during my 8 years there, practising with some
of Canada’s leading practitioners in the space, was exceptional.
It was there that I really started to build my private funds and
registrant practice. Earlier this year I joined Lawson Lundell to
further develop my practice and I am fortunate to have built strong
relationships with loyal clients who have supported this move.
Q: What is your company’s focus in the exempt market?
A: We are a business law firm with offices in Vancouver, Calgary
and Yellowknife. In the exempt market, we advise clients in
connection with the formation, financing and ongoing operations
of private mutual funds, hedge funds and other pooled investment
funds. We also assist clients in obtaining and maintaining
investment fund manager, portfolio manager and exempt market
dealer registration. We basically cover the gamut of legal needs
for pooled funds and registrants.
I really enjoy working with clients in this space. They are
entrepreneurial, creative and hard working. They are passionate
about what they do. Effective representation of these clients requires
a pragmatic, business oriented approach, a deep understanding
of the regulatory and policy environment and a strong, respected
reputation with the regulators at the BCSC in particular.
