Maria is a corporate lawyer in the Capital Markets group of
McLeod Law. Her focus is on corporate finance, capital
markets, mergers & acquisitions and securities regulation.
Maria represents both private and public clients in domestic
and international transactions. She most recently represented
Attabotics in a financing to expand the Calgary, Alberta
company’s manufacturing operations and develop new
technologies as well as CEMATRIX Corporation in its cross-border acquisition of Pacific International Grout Co.
Q: The PCMA is delighted that McLeod Law once again
joins forces with the PCMA. Your firm has always
supported Canada largest private capital markets community, what will you personally bring to it?
Our Capital Markets group is committed to the industry and
we see opportunity ahead for the private capital markets
industry for the issuers, the dealers, MICs and MFTs.
The PCMA is truly the only game in Canada and they do a
tremendous role of advocacy and bringing the industry
together, nationally and provincially.
Q. Tell us about your company and its focus.

Q: What is your company’s focus in the private markets?
We assist our clients in raising capital to enable their growth
and to obtain or maintain regulatory compliance.
We have a capital markets team that has relationships with the
regulators and experience managing regulatory compliance.
We continually monitor the requirements and proposed
regulatory regimes that could affect our clients.
In addition, we act for borrowers and private lenders in Alberta,
including mortgage investment entities, mortgage syndicators,
and mortgage brokers, as well as public and private companies.
Q: What one thing do you emphasize above all else when
talking to exempt market dealers about their regulatory
The regulators have taken a keen interest over the past few years
in the exempt market regulatory regime and it has become a
major priority. Regulatory compliance is critical, especially when it
comes to suitability, KYC and KYP requirements.
Q: What one thing do you wish above all to tell those who
are unfamiliar with the private capital markets?
The private capital markets are constantly evolving. They assist
in maintaining a robust and healthy economy and have helped
to promote economic growth in Canada. The PCMA is the
leading organization in Canada to advocate for the industry
and bring everyone together.
Q: In your opinion, what are some of the major challenges
and opportunities in the private capital markets?
We see an opportunity for the industry to expand by offering
financing solutions that are tailored to the smaller, owner-operated companies which require the capital to expand, and
yet, do not have the same access to capital the big players out
We also see the need for more organized efforts at the provincial level, particularly in our own backyard, and our neighbour
to the West.

It is integral to the private markets industry that we have
organized representation at the provincial and national levels.
